The Do's and Don'ts of Sleeping With Earplugs
Do: Use Earplugs When Traveling
- Travel disrupts our sleep and we should do everything in our power to make sure we’re well rested even when we’re not at home! Also consider adding an eye mask.
Don’t: Use Earplugs Every Night
- It’s best not to use earplugs every single night if you can help it. Wearing earplugs consistently doesn’t allow for earwax to drain properly and can require medical ear drops or even to have the wax buildup surgically removed.
Do: Use Earplugs Instead of Sleeping Pills
- If you have trouble ignoring sounds and it is a factor that drives you to over-the-counter or prescription sleeping pills, choose the earplugs instead. Although there may be some minimal side effects to earplug use, none of them compare with the side effects associated with sleeping medications.
Don’t: Use Earplugs if You Have an Ear Infection
- Earplugs can hold onto bacteria and earwax making them dangerous to use with an ear infection.
Do: Replace them Often
- As stated before, your earplugs may harbor bacteria and cause a variety of problems. If you use earplugs often in your life make sure you are replacing them frequently to keep them clean and safe to use!
